The ETI is a UK organisation that is tackling the urgent need to accelerate the development and deployment of low-carbon technologies to meet the UK’s energy targets. (A mouthful I know!!). With an exhibition planned at the Low Carbon Event in 2009 the ETI intended to host a unique interactive ‘Day in the Life’ experience exhibit. Coined as “The only interactive simulation of its kind” the unique 15-minute immersive experience required the audience to leave with a better understanding of how electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles can be used, how they can be recharged and what they might be like to live with. We were approached by UK design consultancy Pauley Creative to help visualise this project in 3D and offer our expertise in 3D design, Visualisation and animation.

The Brief

1: Create 5 minutes of Animated Footage to visually present the concept of Hybrid Electric Cars to a UK Audience.
2: Work alongside an Audio commentary and the implementation of BBC Archive footage
3: Create footage for a Dual Super HD Wide screen display and a 8ft Round Projected screen

Our Solution

This was a superb project that literally tested the fine balance of Cost Vs Quality Vs Delivery Time to its absolute limits. Firstly we had this fine, exciting visual feast to prepare, secondly it had to be excellent quality and 4 minutes of animated footage at a staggering 2000px wide (thats 6000 frames my friends!) and thirdly and certainly not for the feint hearted had to be delivered in two weeks!! Concepts to final delivery.

This project was a challenge from the word go as speed was key to create the concepts, manage and build the assets and ensure a clean, clear quality on final delivery, so we had to manage this in a practical no nonsense fashion in order to deliver on time.

We knew we would encounter problems with rendering. A 640×480 web video, sure, a few days on our machines maxuimum, but 2000px wide images we worked out would take a staggering 45 days on our internal render network. How do you solve that? Online render farms! Costly? Yes, Quick? Hell yeah. We managed render out using an external network in just 24 hours. This freed up a huge amount of time in order to concentrate on making this project come together smoothly and efficiently.

Overall, a fantastic project to work on, it met all the challenges a design consultancy like us works hard to overcome, yet huge sigh of relief when finally delivered.
